MADISON, NJ – The top-ranked Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went undefeated on the day to win its fifth straight, and 11
th overall, Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Championship Sunday. The Blue Jays also won their eighth Sabre squad title and finished second in the Foil. In the individual championship, sophomore
Josephine Chang won the Sabre title.
Hopkins opened its title defense with a 20-7 win over host Drew. Chang and sophomore
Adelaide Benoit won three bouts each to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. Senior
Czarina Alfonso and sophomore
Rosy Cepero did the same as the Foil squad won 8-1. The Epee squad dropped a tough 5-4 decision, with freshman
Anika Kale winning all three of her bouts.
Hopkins then beat Hunter, 24-3, with a sweep of the three weapons. Benoit and freshman
Victoria Li went a combined 6-0 as the Sabre squad won 8-1. Alfonso, Cepero and freshman
Julianna Wu combined for all nine wins of the Foil squad. Junior
Katelyn McShine won each of her three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
The Blue Jays beat the Vassar Brewers, 19-8, in their closest match of the round robin portion. Chang and Li each went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to another 8-1 win. Wu and sophomore
Bethany Lee did the same for the Foil squad in a 7-2 win. The Epee squad lost 5-4, with junior
Ameera Ebrahim and sophomore
Mickey Zhang winning two bouts each.
JHU then shutout Yeshiva, 27-0, for its fourth win of the day. Freshman
Adele Dai led the Sabre squad with three wins. Cepero, Lee and Wu combined for all nine wins for the Foil squad. And in the Epee,

Hopkins followed that with a 20-7 win over Stevens, ranked eighth, to wrap up pool play. Chang and Li once again combined for six wins in an 8-1 win for the Sabre squad. Alfonso and Lee did the same as the Foil squad grabbed an 8-1 win. Ebrahim won two of her three bouts as the Epee squad fell 5-4.
The Blue Jays then faced the Wellesley Blue, ranked fifth, in the championship match. The Blue Jays won two of the three weapons to take the match, 19-8, and the title. Chang, Li and freshman
Lauren Prieur combined to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Wu won two of her bouts and the Foil squad dropped a close 5-4 match. Kale won each of her three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win.
Chang becomes the fifth Blue Jay to win the EWFC Sabre title and the third in the last four championships. Li finished in eighth place in the Sabre championship. Junior
Diya Kulkarni finished second in the Epee and Ebrahim finished in third. In the Foil championship, Wu took fifth place for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action next Sunday at the Temple Invitational.
