Box Score DAVENPORT, FL – The 13
th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team had its three-game winning streak halted Friday afternoon as Middlebury jumped to an early 5-1 lead and held off a Blue Jay rally for a 7-5 victory. The Blue Jays slip to 10-6 with the loss, while the Panthers move to 6-5.
Â
After spotting the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a
Matthew Cooper RBI-single, the Panthers took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as they got back-to-back two-out singles and then jumped in front on a three-run Nathan Samii home run to center field.
Â
The 3-1 lead ballooned to 5-1 in the bottom of the second as the Panthers got solo home runs from Beau Root and David Byrne off Blue Jay starter
Matt Savedoff.
Â
Savedoff settled down after the second inning and worked his way out of jams in the third and fifth innings to keep the Blue Jays within striking distance.
Â
Hopkins broke through in the top of the sixth as they pulled within a run by plating three runs on just one hit. After Cooper and
Shawn Steuerer were hit by pitches to open the inning,
Dillon Souvignier tripled them home and then scored himself on a
Caleb Cyr sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 5-4.
Â
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly of their own and held a 6-4 lead until the top of the eighth when Cyr hit a one-out solo home run to pull the Jays within one.Â
Tripp Myers was later hit by a pitch and stole second, but was stranded there to keep it a one-run game.
Â
A Chris Borter sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth restored the two-run lead for Middlebury entering the ninth, when Cooper's one-out line drive to short was handled and quickly turned into a game-ending double play.
Â
Savedoff took the loss for the Blue Jays as he went 5.0 innings and allowed five runs and nine hits. Cooper and
Alex Shane both collected a pair of hits and Cyr and Souvignier added two RBIs apiece for Johns Hopkins.
Â
Mitchell Schroeder led a 12-hit attack for Middlebury as he was 3-for-5 with a run scored. The Panthers' two-through-five batters all had multi-hit games and were a combined 9-of-15 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Owen Tross picked up the win on the mound as he went 7.1 innings and scattered seven hits while allowing all five Blue Jay runs.
Â
The Blue Jays will conclude their spring trip in Florida on Saturday morning when they take on Augustana (9:00 am).
