Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team hosted Franklin & Marshall in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament Thursday night, sweeping the Diplomats 5-0 to secure their spot in the Blue Jays' 17
th consecutive Conference Championship.
Sydney Langer and
Kamila Wong opened the match with an 8-2 win on Number 2 doubles, with
Ashley Chang and
Lia Melvin coming in just behind with an 8-2 win of their own on Number 3 doubles before
Sophia Kim and
Jay Xiao completed the sweep following their 8-4 victory at the top flight.
Already ahead 3-0 Hopkins needed two singles wins to trigger the clinch and automatic victory, with Melvin and Chang providing just that at Number 6 and Number 3 singles. Melvin was the first to finish on Court 6, grabbing a 6-1, 6-1 win while Chang got off to a 6-0 first-set victory before securing the individual and team win with a 6-2 second-set win. The remaining four flights were all in Hopkins' favor prior to going down as unfinished, with Kim and Wang also grabbing 6-0 first-set wins while
Mary Beth Hurley and Wong took their opening sets 6-1.
Up next for Hopkins is a match against Swarthmore in the Centennial Conference Championships where the Blue Jays will look to win their 17
th consecutive Conference title. Matches will be played in Annapolis, MD, with the time of opening serve to be decided.
