Babb Tabbed D3Baseball.com Region V Coach of the Year, Six Named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams

BALTIMORE, MD – For the fourth time in his career, Johns Hopkins baseball head coach Bob Babb has been named the D3Baseball.com Region V Coach of the Year. Babb is joined by ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honorees Caleb Cyr, Alex Shane, Shawn Steuerer, Kieren Collins, Quinn Rovner and Dylan Whitney, with both polls being released this morning.

The Blue Jays' head coach took home his fourth D3Baseball.com Region V Coach of the Year honors after leading Hopkins to its 11th 35+-win season in program history. In Babb's 45th season at the helm, the Blue Jays won their 18th Centennial Conference Championship, seventh NCAA Regional Title and appeared in the program's third Super Regional before ultimately falling to top-ranked Endicott. Hopkins finished the season ranked first in home runs (101), fourth in scoring (10.1 runs per game), and first in slugging percentage (.586).

Already the winningest active head coach in Division III baseball at the start of the season, Babb reached another milestone in the 2024 campaign, winning his 1300th game in Hopkins' Regional victory over Arcadia. Babb's 1301 career wins are the fifth most in Division III history, with his winning percentage of .729 also ranking as the fourth best among active Division III coaches.

Cyr was the lone All-Region V First Team honoree following an explosive senior season. The Coral Springs, FL native finished the year slashing .341/.489/.899 — all of which were career highs — with 44 hits, 10 doubles, 20 home runs and 63 RBIs. Cyr led the team in RBIs, home runs and slugging percentage, with his marks in the latter two statistics ranking as the second best in program history and fourth and first in Division III respectively. The senior saved his best for last in 2024, racking up eight home runs and 20 RBIs in the Blue Jays' eight postseason games.

Shane finished with a slash line of .339/.441/.630 with 56 hits, 13 doubles and 11 home runs en route to his second ABCA/Rawlings All-Region V Second Team selection in as many seasons. The sophomore showed improved power at the plate in 2024, more than tripling his home run tally from his freshman season while also upping his RBI tally from 29 to 40. Shane remained one of Hopkins' most consistent batters throughout the year, putting together a 17-game hitting streak and streak of 34 games in which he reached base safely.

Steuerer was the Blue Jays's second All-Region V Second Team selection after slashing .363/.462/.777 in another impressive junior campaign. The Wellington, FL native paced the Blue Jays in hits (57) and runs (57) and ranked second in home runs (7) and RBIs (52) to continue his climb Hopkins' record books. Steuerer's 57 hits pushed him over 200 for his career, making him just the sixth Blue Jay to reach that mark in program history, with the junior also ranking second all-time in home runs (42) and sixth in RBIs (149 heading into his senior season. Steuerer hit homers in bunches, becoming the seventh player in program history to hit three home runs in a single game in program history in Hopkins' win over McDaniel before also hitting seven homers in the final eight games of the season.

Collins garnered the third ABCA/Rawlings All-Region V Honors of his career in his final season as a Blue Jay. The graduate student finished the year 6-0 with a 3.33 ERA, allowing 29 runs — 26 earned — on 64 hits and fanning a team-best 56 batters in 70.1 innings. Collins did the heavy lifting in two combined shutouts for Hopkins but was at his best during the postseason, tossing seven shutout innings against St. Joseph's (L.I.) before throwing a career-high nine innings in which he allowed five runs and struck out five in Game 1 of its Super Regional series against No. 1 Endicott. The graduate student concludes his Blue Jays career tied for the 11th most wins, with his 22-4 record also tying him for the ninth best winning percentage in Hopkins history.

Rovner — an ABCA/Rawlings All-Region V Third Team honoree — was a key cog in his first season with the Blue Jays, finishing 6-2 with an ERA of 3.90 having allowed 27 runs — 25 earned — on 53 hits while striking out 42 in 57.2 innings. The graduate student was most impressive in Centennial Conference play during which he went 3-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.38 en route an All-Conference First Team selection.

Whitney was the Blue Jays' sixth and final ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honoree, earning a spot on the Third Team following a breakout junior campaign. The Oak Park, IL native slashed .339/.412/.552 and put up career-best marks in hits (56), doubles (12), home runs (7) and RBIs (39) after working his way from the nine-spot at the start of the season all the way to ending the campaign as Hopkins' leadoff man. Whitney held a 13-game hitting streak from April 20 to May 19, with his season being highlighted by a perfect 4-4 performance in a win over Dickinson in which the junior tallied a career high five RBIs and secured the program its 18th Centennial Conference Championship.
