Blue Jays in ITA Southeast Semifinals for Singles and Doubles

Box Score 1 FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins advanced a singles player and a pair of doubles teams to the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Championship this weekend. Sophia Kim will play in Monday's singles' semifinals while Jay Xiao and Lia Melvin will face off against Kamila Wong and Ava Li in the doubles' semifinals. In addition, Sahana Sanjeev won the Blue 1 singles draw.
 
Kim, seeded third in the draw, won her first-round match without losing a game to Ella Knox (Catholic). She then beat Tanea Sprull (Shenandoah) 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16. Kim defeated ninth-seeded Victoria Gazda (Carnegie Mellon) 6-1, 6-3 and then advanced to the semifinals when Xiao withdrew from their quarterfinal match.
 
Xiao, seeded ninth, beat Natalie Kim (Mary Washington) 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 64. They then won 6-4, 6-4 over Brianna Viets (Swarthmore). In the round of 16, Xiao rallied to win 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10) over fifth-seeded Raine Weis (Christopher Newport) to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. Wong, also seeded fifth, lost just one game in her opening-round win over Olivia Hall (Salisbury). She then prevailed in three sets over Racheal Fitzgerald (Haverford) 6-0, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (8). Wong won again in three sets as she topped Erin Li (Swarthmore) 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (6) to advance to the quarterfinals. She withdrew from that match after advancing to the semifinals in doubles.
 
Li, seeded fourth in the draw, opened with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Riho Iijima (Washington & Lee). She followed that with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Mallika Reddy (Haverford) to advance. Li beat ninth-seeded Lena Kersten (Randolph) 6-4, 6-1 to the quarterfinals. Li led fifth-seeded Shelly Zinchenko (Carnegie Mellon) 6-3, 3-6, 4-2 before retiring in the third set.
 
Sophomore Sydney Langer, the fifth seed, beat Mia Linam (Christopher Newport) 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the round of 64. She then won 6-4, 6-3 over Jenna Crain (Dickinson). In the round of 16, Langer lost 6-3, 6-0 to ninth-seeded Ancele Dolensek (Carnegie Mellon). Ninth-seeded Melvin lost her first-round match to Joycie Lu (Carnegie Mellon) 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
 
In the doubles draw, Xiao and Melvin are seeded fifth and had a first-round bye. The pair then beat Sarah Donnelly and Greer Webb (Washington & Lee) 8-4. In the round of 16, Xiao and Melvin lost just one game in their victory over ninth-seeded Alix Dry and Stephanie Untermeyer. The duo then punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-5 win over Divya Venkatarama and Dolensek, the number three seed.
 
Wong and Li, seeded ninth, also had a first-round bye. They earned their first win without dropping a game versus Alisa Steele and Crain. Wong and Li turned the same trick against fifth-seeded Samantha Robertson and Weis to move on to the quarterfinals. The pair followed that with an 8-4 win over second-seeded Grace Lorenz and Lauren Long (Washington & Lee).
 
King and Langer advanced to the quarterfinals as the number one seed. After a first-round bye, the pair won a close 8-7 (4) match over Kylie Schaefer and Mia Linam (Christopher Newport). They then beat Anika Joshi and Annika Hou (Carnegie Mellon), 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Kim and Langer lost to fifth-seeded Allie Murrell and Mary Kate Kahl (Washington & Lee), 8-5.
 
Catharina Ausfahl and Sahana Madala opened the tournament with an 8-2 win over Zoe Vliegen and Lina Hackner (Virginia Wesleyan). The pair then beat Lara Geib and Madeline Posner (Swarthmore) 8-5 to advance to the round of 16. Ausfahl and Madala's run ended with a close 8-7 (3) loss to fourth-seeded Addison Felts and Natalie Kim (Mary Washington). Zoe Hsieh and Sanjeev won their first match 8-5 over Lu and Gazda. They then lost to Hana Kimmey and Nikhita Simhambhalta (Marymount), 8-5, in the round of 32.  
 
In the Blue 1 draw, Sanjeev won her first-round match without losing a game versus Emma Eguia (Stevens). Shen then beat Jordan Kach (Washington & Lee) 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Sanjeev beat Aubrey Zhou 7-5, 6-1 and then beat Haley Stoltz (Washington & Lee) 6-1, 6-3 to win the draw. Zhou opened with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Webb and then rallied to beat Joshi 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7) to advance to the semifinals.
 
Hsieh won her first match 6-3, 6-2 over Sarah Donnelly (Washington & Lee). She followed that with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (2) win over Geib. In the semifinals, she trailed 7-5 before retiring against Stoltz. Audrey Wijono lost a tough first-round match to Lily Muir (Salisbury) 7-6 (6), 6-4.
 
The doubles semifinals are scheduled for 9:00 am on Monday morning with the singles' semifinals to follow.
