Johns Hopkins Tops NJIT and Haverford at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Johns Hopkins wrapped up a weekend that included six ranked opponents with wins over NJIT and Haverford at the Philadelphia Invitational. The Blue Jays are now 8-11 on the season.
 
Hopkins lost to 10th-ranked Ohio State, 21-6, to open the day. Ky McSweeney won each of their three bouts, including the clinching bout, to lead the Sabre squad to a 5-4 win. Rosy Cepero picked up the Jays' lone win in an 8-1 loss for the Foil squad, while the Epee squad lost 9-0.
 
JHU then fell to sixth-ranked Duke, 21-6, in round two. Josephine Chang won twice in a 6-3 loss in the Sabre. Cepero did the same as the Foil squad lost 6-3 and the Epee squad fell 9-0.
 
The Blue Jays rebounded with a 21-6 win over the NJIT Highlanders. Victoria Li and Adele Dai combined for six wins to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Cepero won each of her three bouts and the Foil squad picked up a 6-3 victory. In the Epee, Anika Kale went 3-0 to lead the Blue Jays to a 6-3 win.
 
Hopkins dropped a 16-11 decision to NYU, ranked second in Division III. Dai and Lauren Prieur won twice each to lead the Sabre squad to a 5-4 win. In the Foil, Cepero, Adrianne Lin and Sophia Baleeiro each won once in a 6-3 loss. Kale, Ameera Ebrahim and Mariela Abramson did the same as the Epee squad lost 6-3.
 
The Blue Jays lost to the eighth-ranked Cornell Big Red, 19-8, in round five. Prieur, Chang and Jessie Tong won one bout each in a 6-3 loss in the Sabre. Cepero, Lin and Baleeiro did the same in a 6-3 loss for the Foil. And in the Epee, Abramson and Katelyn McShine won one bout each in a 7-2 loss.
 
Hopkins wrapped up the weekend with a 25-2 win over Haverford. Ky McSweeney, Tong and Adelaide Benoit combined for nine wins in the Sabre. Lin, Baleeiro and Prieur also went a combined 9-0 for the Foil squad. McShine won each of her three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
 
JHU returns to action on Sunday, February 2 with the Blue Jays home invitational.
