Chang Earns 300th Win; JHU Goes Unbeaten at Drew Invitational

MADISON, NJ – Three Johns Hopkins fencers reached milestone victories and the Blue Jays went 7-0 at the Drew Invitational Sunday. Josephine Chang became just the second fencer in program history to reach 300 wins. Bethany Lee earned her 200th win and Anika Kale notched her 100th win.
 
Hopkins opened the day with a 26-1 win over Wheaton. Chang, Adelaide Benoit and Lauren Prieur combined for nine wins for the Sabre squad. Mariela Abramson, Janie McSweeney and Thansi Garikipati did the same for the Epee squad. Julianna Wu and Nina Markovsky each won three bouts to lead the Foil squad to an 8-1 win.
 
Hopkins beat Wagner, 19-7, including a tight 5-4 win in the Sabre. Chang and Prieur won two bouts apiece in the Sabre. Wu and Rosy Cepero notched three wins each in a 9-0 win in the Foil. Nicole Yu did the same to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win.
 
The Blue Jays then beat the NJIT Highlanders, 23-4. Benoit, Chang and Jessie Tong led the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win with three wins each. Cepero and Wu combined for six wins in an 8-1 win in the Foil. Abramson, Yu and Mickey Zhang won two bouts each to pace the Epee squad to a 6-3 win.
 
Hopkins followed with a close 14-13 win over Denison. Chang and Maya Balakumaran won twice each and the Sabre squad grabbed a 5-4 win. Markovsky led the Blue Jays with two wins in a 6-3 loss by the Foil squad. Yu led the Epee squad to a 6-3 by winning each of her three bouts.
 
JHU then won 17-10 over Cleveland State, led by the Foil squad's 8-1 win. Cepero and Markovsky combined for six wins to lead the Foilists. Benoit and Tong won two bouts each and the Sabre squad won a close 5-4 match. Anika Kale won two of her bouts in a 5-4 loss by the Epee squad.
 
The Blue Jays cruised to a 25-2 win over the host Drew Rangers. Cepero, Wu and Markovsky combined for a 9-0 win by the Foil squad. Abramson, McSweeney and Kale did the same for the Epee squad. In the Sabre, Balakumaran went 3-0 to lead the Jays to a 7-2 win.
 
Hopkins closed out the day with a 24-3 win over Detroit Mercy. Benoit, Balakumaran and Ky McSweeney led the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Wu and Markovsky won three bouts each and the Foil squad won 8-1. Garikipati won each of her three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win.
 
Chang now ranks second in program history, among all weapons, with 304 career wins. She needs 60 wins to tie Erin Chen's all-time mark in the Sabre. Lee moved into a tie for seventh in JHU history with 2-5 career Foil wins.
 
Hopkins returns to action next Sunday, November 9 at the Columbia Invitational.
