PHILADELPHIA, PA – Johns Hopkins returned to action for the first time in more than two months and picked up two wins at the Philadelphia Invitational. JHU dropped its first match against UC San Diego (16-11) but bounced back with wins over host and 14
th ranked Temple (15-12) and Lafayette (24-3). The Blue Jays improve to 11-2 on the season.
Hopkins won the Sabre (7-2) in the opening round but dropped the Foil and Epee by the same 7-2 score.
Lauren Prieur led the Sabre squad by winning all three of her bouts, while
Josephine Chang and
Adele Dai won two each.
Bethany Lee and
Nina Markovsky each won bout in the Foil and in the Epee,
Nicole Yu and
Mariela Abramson did the same.
The Blue Jays rebounded in round two with an upset of the host Owls. JHU dropped a close 5-4 decision in the Sabre but answered with a 6-3 win in the Foil and a 5-4 win in the Epee. Chang won each of her three bouts in the Sabre while
Rosy Cepero did the same to lead the Foil squad to victory.
Thansi Garikipati went 3-0, including the clinching bout, while Yu added two wins in the Epee.
Hopkins wrapped up the day with an easy win over Lafayette. Chang, Prieur and
Jessie Tong led the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Lee and Markovsky won three bouts apiece to lead the Foil squad. And in the Epee, Abramson, Garikipati and
Janie McSweeney led the Blue Jays.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, January 18 at the JHU Invitational, scheduled to begin at 10:30 am.
