MADISON, NJ – Johns Hopkins finished second at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship Saturday. The Blue Jays also captured the Sabre team championship and senior
Rosy Cepero earned her 300
th career win.
Cepero, the program leader in career Foil wins is just the third Johns Hopkins fencer, in any weapon to reach 300 career wins. She joins classmate and Sabrist
Josephine Chang and Erin Chen '20 in the 300-win club. Hopkins claims the West Point Trophy as the runner-up for the 10
th time.
The Blue Jay Sabre squad went 36-3 in pool play to win the Giorgio Santelli Trophy. It is Hopkins' first Sabre title since 2019 and fourth overall.
Jessie Tong won all seven of her bouts, while
Maddie Huang and
Lauren Prieur each went 6-0.
Josephine Chang and
Adelaide Benoit finished 6-1 each and
Maya Balakumaran finished 5-1. Prieur then competed in the individual championship and placed 12
th.
The Foil squad went 32-7 to finish in third place out of the 14 teams. Cepero went 10-3 in pool play, earning her 300
th career win with her second win.
Bethany Lee and
Julianna Wu finished 6-1 each while
Sophia Baleeiro and
Nina Markovsky each went 5-1. In the individual championship, Cepero placed fifth and Wu finished 15
th.
The Epee squad finished with a 29-10 record in pool play and placed third out of 14.
Nicole Yu and
Thansi Garikipati each finished with a 6-0 record in pool play.
Anika Kale went 5-2, while
Janie McSweeney and
Mickey Zhang went 4-3 each. In addition,
Mariela Abramson finished with a 4-2 record. Yu then went 3-1 in the individual competition to finish as the runner-up. It is the highest finish by a Blue Jay in the Epee since Lauren Chinn placed second in 2009.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 7 at the NCAA Regional Championship.
