FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins kicked off the weekend with a 5-2 win over 14
th-ranked Carnegie Mellon Friday afternoon at Mary Washington. The Blue Jays win their sixth straight as they improve to 7-3. The Tartans fall to 11-2. The win snaps a six match losing streak to CMU.
Hopkins took the early lead in the match by grabbing wins at one and three doubles.
Claire Loftus and
Sahana Madala beat Rachel Li and Shelly Zinchenko, 6-1, at three to pick up the first win.
Ava Li and
Kamila Wong then clinched the doubles' point with a 6-3 win over Kotstha Modak and Ika Kanumuri at one. Ancele Dolensek and Divya Venkatarama prevented the sweep when they won 6-2 over
Lia Melvin and
Sydney Langer at two.
Madala pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 2-0 when she won 6-3, 6-2 over Victoria Gazda at five singles. Loftus followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at four versus Venkatarama. Langer then clinched the win when she beat Dolensek 6-4, 6-2 at six. Jane Wong grabbed a win for the Tartans with a three-setter over
Kamila Wong at two. Melvin answered with a three-set win of her own, beating Zinchenko at one. Kanumuri closed out the match with a tight 7-6, 7-5 win over Li at three.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 28 as the Blue Jays take on 29
th-ranked Mary Washington. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
