Hopkins Displays Power in 17-10 Win Over Washington

CHESTERTOWN - The Johns Hopkins baseball team used four home runs to build a 16-2 lead and held on for a 17-10 win over Washington College this afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improved to 17-4 overall and 5-0 in the CC, while the Shoremen fell to 10-8-1 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

JHU opened a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as senior Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) led off the game with a single and junior Jay Cieri (Pine Brooke, NJ/Montville) followed with his fourth home run of the year. Cieri was 3-for-3 on the day with three runs scored, while Sineath was 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

Washington tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Hopkins responded with five runs in the third to take a 7-2 lead. Junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) drove in a run with a single and two batters later sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) smacked a three-run home run, his third of the season. The Blue Jays added three runs in the fourth as Cieri and Urban scored on a three-run home run by senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling). Taylor's fourth home run of the year gave JHU a 10-2 lead.

The Blue Jays would extend the lead to 16-2 with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth highlighted by a two-run home run from freshman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson), his second of the year. Washington made things interesting as the Shoremen scored six runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 16-10, but JHU was able to hold the lead in the final two innings.

Senior Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) earned his third win of the season allowing just one earned run on four hits in five innings. Rosenberg is now 22-3 for his career and has won his last 11 decisions dating backk to last season. Tom Palazzo fell to 3-2 for Washington as he allowed 10 runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings.

With four more home runs against the Shoremen, Hopkins now has 37 homers in 21 games and needs just nine home runs the rest of the season to set a new school record. The 1998 team set the school mark with 45 home runs in 40 games.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow as JHU hosts Catholic for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 p.m. Hopkins will face Washington again on Friday at home before hosting Franklin & Marshall for a doubleheader on Saturday.
