Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) and junior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) each recorded complete game victories as the Johns Hopkins baseball team swept a doubleheader versus Ursinus this afternoon, winning 6-1 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap. The Blue Jays, who can secure first place in the Centennial Conference playoffs by winning two of their last three conference games, improved to 28-5 overall and 14-1 in CC play. Ursinus fell to 17-17 overall and 11-5 in conference action.

In the first game, Hopkins struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning as junior Jay Cieri (Pine Brooke, NJ/Montville) hit a solo home run and sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) brought home sophomore Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) and senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) with a single. Cieri's home run was his fifth of the year, while Cetta finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

After Ursinus scored a single run in the third, JHU put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cetta scored on a single from senior Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) and Ippolito smacked his team-leading third triple of the year to bring in Sineath and Cieri for a 6-1 JHU advantage. Sineath needs just two runs to become JHU's all-time leader with 164 career runs scored.

Brown made the lead stand as he allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 4-0 for the season. In the process, he lowered his ERA to 3.62 and has given up just one run and seven hits over his last two starts, both complete game victories. Scott Barr suffered the loss for the Bears and fell to 4-5 on the year.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the nightcap with a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor and senior Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) each singled, junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) followed with a walk, and Cetta drove in Taylor with a sacrifice fly. Hopkins added a run in the fourth as DePalma reached on an error and later scored as Ursinus failed to complete a double play.

The Bears scored in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to 2-1, but Rosenberg was able to hold the lead for his team-leading seventh win of the season. He has won 15 consecutive decisions and recorded six strikeouts to move within one of JHU's career strikeout record of 241 held by Steve Hand. Rosenberg has allowed just two earned runs in 48 innings this season for a 0.38 earned run average. Mike Lombardo took the loss for Ursinus as he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings.

The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday as JHU travels to Gettysburg for a makeup game originally scheduled for Friday, April 19.
