Hopkins Crushes Villa Julie, 14-5

BALTIMORE, MD - Freshman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) hit two of the team's six home runs as Johns Hopkins cruised to an easy 14-5 win over Villa Julie in non-conference baseball action this afternoon. The Blue Jays, winners of 10 straight games and 15 of their last 16, improved to 22-4 overall. Villa Julie fell to 10-13 with its third straight loss. With the team's sixth home runs, JHU set a school single-season record with 46 home runs in just 26 games. The previous mark of 45 was set by the 1998 squad in 40 games.

Villa Julie opened the scoring in the top of the second Andy Welling doubled and scored three batters later on a double by Jeremy Ziegler. The Blue Jays responded in the bottom of the inning as Durgala hit the first of his two home runs, a solo shot to left, and sophomore Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) added his third home run of the season, also of the solo variety.

Hopkins took control of the game in the bottom of the third inning with five runs to take a 7-1 advantage. Durgala provided the highlight with a three-run home run, his fourth of the year and second in as many innings. Freshman Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) added an RBI double and scored on a single by sophomore Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade). The Mustangs chipped away at the lead as Chip Bokel and Jeremy Ziegler each hit solo home runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-3. Matt Hewitt capped the Villa Julie scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning.

JHU regained momentum in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year, a solo bomb down the left field line. Long then walked and scored on an RBI single by freshman Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) to give Hopkins a 9-5 advantage. Sophomore Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) contributed with a solo home run in the sixth, his fourth of the year, and Casale drove in Long with a triple in the seventh as JHU increased the margin to 11-5.

With two runners on and no outs in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Mike Stankus (Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) delivered a the record-setting home run, a tremendous shot off the scoreboard in left center. The homer was his fourth of the season and set the final margin at 14-5.

Senior Jason Setty (Mt. Pleasant, TX/Mt. Pleasant) won his career-high fifth game of the season to improve to 5-0 on the year and 17-2 (.894) for his career. He allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings while striking out four. Senior Mike Overstreet (Mt. Airy, MD/Linganore) Stafford combined for four scoreless innings of relief. David Jones took the loss for Villa Julie going three innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow with a Centennial game at Dickinson beginning at 3:30 p.m.
