The Johns Hopkins Baseball team continued its hot start to the 2003 season by defeating fifth-ranked College of Wooster 15-12 Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida. The Blue Jays were down 10-4 after five innings, but scored two runs in the sixth inning and seven more runs in the seventh to take the lead and hold on. The Blue Jays improve to 6-0 on the season, while Wooster falls to 4-2.
Sophomore Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) picked up his first victory as a Blue Jay in relief by pitching the final four-and-a-third innings, while allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five. Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) started the game, and went two-and-a-third innings, allowing six runs while striking out four. Junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) also pitched two-and-a-third innings, allowing four runs while strikng out three.
Offensively, the Blue Jays were led by sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh), who went four-for-five on the afternoon with four runs scored and five RBIs. Winterling also had two solo home runs, and a two-run single in the seventh to give the Blue Jays the lead. Sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) went one-for-five with a three-run home-run, and senior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) scored two runs and had two RBIs.
The Blue Jays will look to extend their winning streak on Friday by playing St. Joseph's College in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
