GETTYSBURG, PA - Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) pitched five strong innings and sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) hit his team-leading fifth home run to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg, 13-3, in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams this afternoon at Gettysburg.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 12-2 overall with their third straight win, broke open a close game with eight runs in the eighth inning en route to their fourth consecutive win over the Bullets. Gettysburg fell to 5-7-1 on the year with its third straight loss.
Hopkins took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) brought in senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) with a deep sacrifice fly to left. Urban had reached with a double to left center and advanced to third on a walk by junior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) and a single by junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy).
The Blue Jays increased the lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning as junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) scored on an RBI single from junior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School), who would later score on a sacrifice fly by Casale. JHU added two runs in the top of the next inning to take a 5-0 lead as Winterling belted a pitch over the fence in left to increase his RBI total to a team-best 17.
Gettysburg got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Ron Lettieri, but the Blue Jays answered with eight runs in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach at 13-1. Casale drove in two runs with a double to left center, and freshman Gary Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) hit a two-run single to right to highlight the inning. The Bullets added a single run in the eighth and ninth innings to set the final margin.
Brown improved to 2-1 on the year as he allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out four in five shutout innings. Winterling and Ippolito were both 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Casale went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. Cetta was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) added three hits in five at-bats and Urban was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Tom Gallione fell to 2-1 for the Bullets as he gave up five runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings. Henry Mullen collected three hits in four at-bats for Gettysburg, while Lettieri was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Blue Jays and Bullets complete the season series on Friday as Hopkins hosts Gettysburg at 3:00 p.m.
