CHESTERTOWN, MD - Sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) hit three home runs, including two grand slams, and drove in 11 runs as Johns Hopkins scored a school-record 32 runs and hit eight home runs in a 32-2 rout of Washington College this afternoon in Centennial Conference baseball action.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 18-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference, tied two and totaled 25 hits en route to their record-setting performance. Hopkins previously scored 30 runs in wins against Episcopal High School (30-15) in 1904 and versus Dickinson (30-0) in 1987. Washington College fell to 1-17 on the year and 1-8 in CC play.

Winterling, who tied the NCAA Division III record with two grand slams in a game and was one RBI shy of tying the NCAA record for RBIs in a game, was 4-for-6 with four runs and 11 runs batted in. He smashed a grand slam in the first inning, crushed his second grand slam in the sixth inning and added a three-run home run in the eighth inning.

Winterling, who became the ninth player in NCAA Division III history with two grand slams in a game, is already tied for sixth on JHU's single season list with nine home runs and has also driven in a team-high 35 runs on the year.

Hopkins took control early with five runs in the first inning behind Winterling's first grand slam and a solo home run by Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson), his seventh of the year. JHU added two runs in the second as junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) hit a solo home run, his second of the year, and sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) drove in a run on a sacrifice.

The Blue Jays increased their lead to 12-0 with five runs in the fourth behind a three-run home run from sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall), his second of the season, and a two-run single by junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph).

Washington College got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Hopkins answered with seven runs in the top of the sixth for a 19-2 advantage. Winterling highlighted the inning with his second grand slam of the game.

JHU continued the outburst as the Blue Jays tallied 12 runs in the top of the eighth. Winterling belted his third home run of the game, a three-run shot, and junior Bryan Eberle (Frederick, MD/Urbana) added his second grand slam of the season as Hopkins sent 15 batters to the plate. With Eberle's slam, the Blue Jays became just the second team in NCAA Division III history to hit three grand slams in a game, tying Richard Stockton, which accomplished the feat during the 1999 season.

Sophomore Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) capped the scoring with a solo home run in the ninth, his first of the year. He became the 16th player to hit a home run this season for Hopkins.

Junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) improved to 4-0 for the Blue Jays as he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six in six innings. Alex Jacobine took the loss for Washington after allowing five runs on two hits and three walks in one inning. Sophomore Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley) and junior Adam Josephart (West Nyack, NY/Clarktown South) combined for three shutout innings of relief for JHU.

Eberle finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBIs. Junior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) and freshman Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) both went 2-for-2 with three runs, while freshman Steve Eno (El Segundo, CA/El Segundo) was 2-for-3 with three runs. In all, 16 players scored at least one run, 15 players tallied a hit and 13 players drove in one or more runs.

The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins travels to face McDaniel College at 3:30 p.m.
