HAVERFORD, PA - Junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener and sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of the second game to lead Johns Hopkins to a sweep of Haverford in a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon.
Berger, who improved to 5-0 on the year, led the Blue Jays to a 10-0 win in the opener with his second career shutout. Winterling drove in junior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) in the top of eighth inning as Hopkins claimed a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. JHU, which has won five straight games, improved to 22-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference. Haverford fell to 12-12-1 overall and 6-9 in CC play.
Hopkins scored five runs in the first inning of and three runs in the second to take command of game one early. Sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson), junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph), sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall), and Casale each drove in one run in the first, while Cetta belted a three-run home run, his fourth of the year, in the second inning.
The Blue Jays added single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth en route to their fourth shutout of the season. Berger allowed just two hits and one walk while recording two strikeouts for his 14th career victory. Tim McLean took the loss for Haverford as he allowed seven runs on six hits in one official inning.
Senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) gave JHU a 1-0 lead in the second game as he drilled his fourth home run of the season in the top of the first inning. The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the seventh when Brandon Mills brought home Mike Primiani with a double to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game into extra innings.
Casale singled to start the top of the eighth and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Cieri. He then moved to third on a flyout by sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) and scored on Winterling's double. Junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) worked a perfect eighth inning for his first save of the season as Hopkins improved to 52-12 all-time against the Fords.
Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) earned the win for the Blue Jays with two innings of relief, while Nick Chanock suffered the loss for Haverford as he went the distance.
The Blue Jays return to action Monday as Hopkins hosts McDaniel College at 3:30 p.m in a matchup of the top two teams in the Centennial Conference.
