BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team used 13 hits and six Dickinson errors to record a 14-5 victory over the Red Devils in Centennial Conferene action this afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays, ranked sixth in the latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll, improved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Dickinson fell to 5-7 on the year and 0-2 in CC play.
The Blue Jays opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) scored on an error by the center fielder. JHU then added two runs in the second as junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) drove in senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) and sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) with a two-run single to left field.
Dickinson cut the margin to 3-1 on a solo home run by Bob Hess in the top of the fourth, by Hopkins answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-1 advantage. Junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) drove in two with a single up the middle and sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) scored after an error by the shortstop.
The Red Devils got within two as Miles Hunt smacked a three-run double to the gap in right center in the top of the sixth inning, but the Blue Jays would again respond with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Durgala highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, to left field.
Brian Rohm capped the Dickinson scoring in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to left field off Blue Jay starter Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School). JHU then scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and added a single run in the eighth to set the final margin. Winterling and sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) both had RBI singles in the seventh, while sophomore Dave Montegari (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
Brown improved to 3-1 on the year as allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out five in 6.1 innings. Sophomore Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) and junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) combined for seven strikeouts in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Hitchner was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Cetta was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Winterling scored three runs, and Spiciarich raised his season average to .500 (12-for-24) as he went 3-for-5 with two runs and a run batted in.
Kevin Vuernick fell to 1-2 as he took the loss for the Red Devils. Vuernick allowed nine runs on 11 hits in six innings. Phil Newman was 3-for-4 with a run and Hess went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Dickinson.
The Blue Jays return to action Thursday as Hopkins travels to face Catholic University in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
