Box Score

BALTIMORE - Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) struck out a career-high 14 batters and sophomore Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) hit two home runs to lead Johns Hopkins past McDaniel, 8-1, in Centennial Conference baseball action this afternoon.

Brown, who improved to 5-2 on the year, allowed just one run on six hits in his third complete game of the season. He struck out two or more batters in six innings and fanned eight of the nine McDaniel starters at least once. Brown's previous high was 12 strikeouts during his no-hit performance against Lakeland on March 8.

In a contest between the top two teams in the league, Hopkins opened the scoring with a single run in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the first, sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) walked, stole second base and scored on a single to right field by sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson).

JHU tallied a run in the second as junior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) brought home senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) with a sharp single through the left side. Urban reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second as the ball went out of play. He then stole third before Casale's single.

McDaniel cut the margin to 2-1 in the top of the fourth as Mike Geaneas reached base on a two-out walk and Kevin Salamone doubled to the gap in right center. The Green Terror would get no closer as the Blue Jays responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 advantage.

Durgala singled to lead off the inning and two batters later, Long reached on an infield single to put runners at first and second. Urban followed with a double to left field to score both runners and scored one batter later as Casale drilled a single up the middle.

Hopkins added a run in the fifth as sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Durgala, and Long capped the scoring with solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings, his third and fourth of the year. Long finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs, while Casale also collected three hits in four at-bats with two runs batted in.

David Skoczlas took the loss for McDaniel as he allowed eight runs on 12 hits in 7.2 innings. Salamone was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Ryan Shotzberger added two hits in five at-bats.

Hopkins returns to action Tuesday as the Blue Jays travel to face Ursinus College for a Centennial Conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
