Baltimore, MD - Mary Washington righthander Kevin Foeman allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out 17 in a complete game victory as the Eagles held on to defeat top-ranked Johns Hopkins, 7-5, Thursday afternoon to snap the Blue Jays' 30-game home winning streak.
Mary Washington, which improved to 29-10, scored in the top of the first off Hopkins senior starter Adam Josephart (West Nyack, NY/Clarkston South) as Jon Hurd led off by getting hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Eric Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Ray Moore.
The Blue Jays, who fell to 37-2 on the year, tied the game in the fourth as senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) led off and reached second on an error by Moore at shortstop. One out later junior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) singled home Cetta to knot the game at 1-1, but the Eagles took the lead for good by scoring four runs in the fifth off Hopkins junior Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley).
Fitzgerald walked to lead off the frame, and after Moore bounced into a fielder's choice, Jay Quintana singled. Lee Rubin then stroked a two-run double, and Tom McDermott followed with a single to plate Rubin. After a Robbie Wright single, Marc Logan hit a sacrifice fly to score McDermott and give Mary Washington a 5-1 lead.
The Eagles added a run in the seventh off Hopkins senior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep), as Quintana led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by McDermott. Mary Washington then tacked on a run in the eighth off senior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) when Fitzgerald lined a one-out single and advanced to third when the ball got through Hopkins junior centerfielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh). Moore then singled home Fitzgerald to make it a 7-1 game.
The Blue Jays answered in the bottom of the inning, as senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola). Winterling then walked to load the bases, and Cetta followed with a grand slam to leftfield, his third home run of the year, to cut the Eagles lead to 7-5.
However Foeman retired the next three batters in the eighth and struck out the side in the ninth as he improved to 11-2 on the season. Hochfelder took the loss and fell to 1-1 for Hopkins, whose last home loss came to Elizabethtown, 12-7, on March 19, 2003.
Quintana, Rubin and McDermott were each 3-for-5 for Mary Washington, which out-hit the Blue Jays, 16-6. Casale was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored for Hopkins, while Spiciarich finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cetta scored twice to go with his four runs batted in.
