BALTIMORE, MD -- Junior Jason Hochfelder scattered three hits over six innings and didn't allow and senior Eric Nigro hit a pair of home runs to lead Johns Hopkins to an 11-1 win over visiting Villa Julie Tuesday afternoon. The win is the eighth straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 8-1. The Mustangs had a three-game winning streak snapped and slip to 9-8.
After plating single runs in the second and third innings, the Blue Jays erupted for six runs in the fourth to put the game away. Sophomore Rob Sanzillo's two-run single got the rally started. Sanzillo later scored on a wild pitch and Nigro's two-run home run capped the rally, during which the Blue Jays collected six hits.
The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs in the sixth as senior Paul Winterling and Nigro hit back-to-back solo home runs and junior Gary Rosenberg singled home senior Mike Durgala who had doubled into the left field gap.
Villa Julie avoided the shutout with a run in the seventh. Brendan Clark's RBI single knocked home Anthony DeFrancisco who had reached two batters earlier on a fielder's choice. Villa Julie collected five of its eight hits in the game off a trio of Blue Jay relievers who all worked one inning in relief of Hochfelder.
Winterling moved into sole possession of second place on JHU's career home run list as his solo shot in the sixth was the 25th of his career. He finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Nigro was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Rosenberg's solo home run in the second inning gave the Blue Jays the lead for good and was one of two hits he collected in the victory.
The win inched Blue Jay head coach Bob Babb closer to career win number 700. Now in his 26th season at Johns Hopkins Babb boasts a career record of 697-252-8.
