Dickinson freshman Brian Kelly induced senior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) to ground out with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, as Dickinson knocked off Johns Hopkins 8-7 in Centennial Conference baseball action. The Blue Jays fall to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Dickinson improves to 5-6-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
Trailing 7-6 going into the bottom of the eighth Luke Volker led off the inning for Dickinson with a double off junior Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin). Dustin Cohen then grounded out to second to move Volker to third, and Ryan Anderson blasted a double to right centerfield to plate Volker and tie the game at 7-7. After Bail got Steve Myers to ground out, he hit Tre Dwinell, and with two outs Chris McInerney laced a run-scoring single to plate the go-ahead run.
Kelly, looking to pick up the save, opened the ninth by striking out senior Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage) but then hit senior Mike Durgala (Annadale, VA/Thomas Jefferson).After Durgala stole second, senior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonough) walked, but Eric Nigro (Randolphh, NJ/Taft) struckout to bring Dickinson to within one out of the upset. Junior Gary Rosenberg (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) walked to load the bases and keep the inning alive, but Kelly got Spiciarich to hit a groundball right back to him to end the game.
Hopkins trailed going into the top of the seventh, but Nigro blasted his sixth home run of the year, and fourth in two games, to give the Blue Jays a slim 7-6 lead.
Bail took the lose in relief for the Blue Jays and falls to 2-2 on the year, while Matt Villone who threw a perfect eighth inning for the Red Devils earned the win, and improved to 2-0.Kelly, despite walking two and hitting one in the ninth was able to make the one-run lead hold up and pick up his first save of the season.
