BALTIMORE, MD - The #19 Johns Hopkins baseball team used five runs in the eighth inning to turn a one-run game into a 15-9 win over Dickinson on Friday afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays (24-4, 12-0 CC) won their tenth straight contest and remain the lone undefeated team in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays wasted little time in getting on the board in this one as junior Jonas Fester led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left. Dickinson answered with four runs in the top of the second as the Blue Jays made three errors in the inning.
Hopkins tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second as senior Brett Izzo was hit by a pitch to start the inning and came around to score as junior Tony Margve, hit his second home run in as many days over the left field fence. The Blue Jays would add one more in the inning as senior Ian Christie reached on an error and scored on junior Jon Solomon's single.
The Blue Jays would add a single run in the third and strike for five more runs in the fourth to take a 10-4 lead after four innings of play. Highlighting the fourth inning for the Jays was junior Rob Pietroforte's RBI single and three sacrifice flies from Izzo, Margve and Christie.
Dickinson made things interesting with two runs in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth inning, to make it a 10-9 game. Mike Lapicki, Ryan Gilcrest and Ryan Anderson all had RBI singles during the stretch for the Red Devils.
Hopkins used five eighth inning runs to turn a one-run game into a 15-9 advantage. The Blue Jays' big hit in the inning came off the bat of Fester as he had an RBI double down the left field line to clear the bases. Fester came around to score on Solomon's single and he scored on a single from Sanzillo.
Greg Harbeck started the game for the Blue Jays and went 3.1, surrendering four runs; one of those runs was earned. Nick Erardi followed Harbeck to the hill and went 2.1 to pick up the win. Senior Brian DeLeo went two scoreless innings to record his third save of the season.
Fester, extended his hit streak to 11 games, as he was 4-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with three runs scored and four RBIs. Solomon was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Sanzillo was 2-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI. Margve was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Lancaster, PA for a big Centennial Conference double-header at Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays and Diplomats will battle for first-place with first pitch of game-one set for 12:30 p.m.
