SALISBURY, MD - The #9 Salisbury University baseball team used five first inning runs to open up an early lead and defeat the #16 Johns Hopkins baseball team, 21-6 on Tuesday afternoon in Salisbury. The Blue Jays (29-8) have now lost two straight games.
Hunter Wessells reached on an infield single to lead off the bottom of the first inning. He was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double from Andrew Jensen. Jensen scored on an RBI single before a hit and a walk loaded the bases. Mark Bostwick was hit by a pitch to force in a run before Salisbury used a wild pitch and a groundout to score two more runs in the inning. Salisbury held a 5-0 lead after one inning of play.
Salisbury would add two runs in the second and another run in the third to take an early 8-0 lead after three innings of play. Hopkins finally got on the board in the fourth as a walk and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Junior third baseman Nate Adelman then worked a walk to force in a run and junior shortstop Jonas Fester walked to force in the second run of the inning. Salisbury responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 10-2 advantage after four innings of play.
Hopkins tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth before Salisbury put another five spot on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The Sea Gulls put another five runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth to take a 21-5 lead after six innings of play.
The Blue Jays got a run in the top of the seventh as senior second baseman Ian Christie walked and came around to score on a single from senior right fielder Nick Venezia.
Ryan Bennick got the win for the Sea Gulls as he went 3.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven. Junior Joe Zaccaria (6-3) took the loss for the Blue Jays as he threw one inning and allowed five runs on three hits.
Junior left fielder Jon Solomon was 2-for-4 at the plate while senior right fielder Brett Izzo was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Adelman went 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI while Christie was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Junior DH Matt Benchener went 1-for-3 with an RBI on the day.
Hopkins returns to action tomorrow when it travels to York College for a 3:30 p.m. start.
