BALTIMORE, MD - Senior co-captain
Thomas de Lyon exploded for 14 goals on Sunday to lead host Johns Hopkins to a pair of crucial league wins over 18th-ranked Bucknell and Navy. The Blue Jays picked up their first CWPA Southern Division win of the year with a 14-12 win over the Bison in the first match of the day and then made it a sweep in the afternoon with a 22-17 win over the Midshipmen. Hopkins beat Navy for the second time in the last two seasons but just the third time in the series history. Hopkins is now 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the CWPA Southern Division.
Hopkins trailed early versus Bucknell as the visitors took an early 2-0 lead before the match was two minutes old. The Blue Jays responded with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead before the Bison tied it just 17 seconds later. Hopkins retook the lead on de Lyon's fourth goal of the day - matching his cap number - with 2:28 to play. But Jack Else's third goal just a minute later made it a 4-4 match after the first quarter.
The Blue Jays took control in the second quarter, behind a six-save showing from sophomore Erik Henrikson, to take an 8-5 lead at the half. Junior Wes Hopkins put JHU ahead 5-4, but a five-meter goal by Julian Colina tied the match for the fourth time. The Jays responded with three straight goals in the final three minutes and 21 seconds of the quarter to go into the break with a three-goal advantage.
The teams traded goals over the opening five minutes of the third quarter and Hopkins led 10-7 with 3:18 to play in the quarter. But Bucknell outscored Hopkins 3-1 over the remainder of the stanza to make the deficit just one heading into the fourth. Sophomores Garrett Davidson and Kevin Yee scored back-to-back goals to push the Blue Jays' lead to 13-10 with 3:32 to go. Mike Kimble trimmed the deficit to two less than a minute later, but Hopkins answered with his third of the match just 32 seconds later. Bucknell would get one more back in the final minute but that's as close as the Bison could get.
De Lyon scored a then career-high six goals and eight points to pace the Blue Jay offense while Hopkins netted a hat trick and two assists. Junior Johnny Beal and sophomore Langdon Froomer each handed out a pair of assists. Sophomore Erik Henrikson made nine saves and swiped six steals to earn the win in the cage.
Three hours later, the Blue Jays poured in 22 goals, a season high and the most they have ever scored against the Midshipmen. The 17 goals allowed are the third most Hopkins has allowed in a win. The Blue Jays jumped out to a three-goal lead on Navy with goals from de Lyon, freshman Matt Fraser and Beal. Navy came right back with a pair of goals to make it a 3-2 game with 2:57 to play in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays responded with four unanswered goals, including a pair by Davidson, to push out to a 7-2 lead. Will Weggeland closed the gap to four with a goal for Navy as time expired in the first.
The teams traded back-and-forth over the first three minutes of the second and Hopkins led 10-6 with 5:32 to play. The Midshipmen then got back-to-back goals and the lead was down to two. The Blue Jays answered with goals from Fraser and Davidson just 27 seconds apart to give JHU a 12-8 lead. Carl Dowzicky got one back for Navy and Hopkins' lead was 12-9 at the half. Hopkins came out firing in the third with a 4-1 run to push out to a 16-10 lead. Dowzicky then sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from de Lyon and it was 17-12 Hopkins with just 2:08 to go in the quarter. Navy followed with two more goals before a late Yee goal made it 18-14 at the end of three.
De Lyon pushed the Blue Jays' lead to five at the 7:01 mark, but the Mids answered with back-to-back goals from Robert Sutherland and Scotty Snowden. Leading by just three with 2:23 to play, Hopkins earned a five-meter shot and Beal put it home to make it a four-goal game. Thirty-two seconds later, de Lyon tied the school single-game goals record with his eighth of the match on a behind-the-back shot, and the lead was 21-16. Navy got one back on a goal by Andrew Lacosse, but Davidson had the final say with his career-best fourth goal of the match with just 19 seconds on the clock.
De Lyon once again led the Blue Jay offense with eight goals and two assists, while also drawing four ejections and blocking a shot. Not to be outdone by De Lyon's record-tying eight goals, Hopkins and Beal added their names to the record book as well. Both finished with seven assists to break the school record of six, held by three different players - including Hopkins. Henrikson started the match and played two and a half quarters while making four saves. Junior Danny Ovelar came on midway through the third quarter and made three saves to preserve the win.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, September 28 in a key league match at George Washington. Match time at the Smith Center is set for 7:00 pm.
