Fort Myers, FL - Junior designated hitter Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) went 4-for-6 with three doubles as the Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated the University of Chicago, 12-9, Wednesday afternoon.
Starting pitcher Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 1-0 this season. Berger struck out six and did not walk a batter as the Blue Jays built a 10-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Maroons battled back with four runs in the sixth inning and five in the eighth, but junior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) closed the door by allowing just one hit over the final inning and a third to pick up his first save of the season.
The Blue Jays took the lead in the second inning, as RBI doubles by freshman third baseman Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) and senior catcher Tom Prevas (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) gave Hopkins a 3-0 lead.
Prevas added a two-run double in the fourth and Durgala drove in two more with a double in the fifth as the Blue Jays extended their lead to 7-0. Hopkins made it a 10-0 game with a three-run sixth inning, capped by an RBI triple by senior first baseman Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling), who drove in senior center fielder Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk).
After Chicago's four-run sixth, the Blue Jays tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on run-scoring hits by Cieri and senior second baseman John Krivonak (Canfield, OH/Canfield).
The Blue Jays pounded out 17 hits, including nine doubles, in the win. Durgala finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior right fielder Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hogan) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and freshman left fielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) scored three runs.
The Blue Jays face SUNY-Brockport Thursday at 4 p.m. in Fort Myers.
