BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team used an eight-run sixth inning to blow open a close game and defeat visiting Villa Julie College, 14-3, this afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Mustangs dropped their season opener.
Villa Julie took a 3-0 in the first inning on the strength of three extra-base hits. Jason Bungori opened the game with a solo home run and the Mustangs added two more runs on a walk and two doubles. Hopkins responded in the bottom of the inning as three Villa Julie errors and three base hits led to three JHU runs.
The Blue Jays added a single run in the third and fifth innings before batting around in the sixth. Sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) opened the scoring with an RBI single before sophomore Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) smashed a three-run home run to left field, the first of his career. Five batters later, senior Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) put the game out of reach as he crushed a grand slam to left.
Ippolito finished the afternoon 4-of-5 with four RBIs, while Sineath was 3-of-5 with two runs, four RBIs, and three stolen bases. Senior Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) scored three runs on the day and sophomore Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) chipped in with two runs batted in.
Sophomore Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) picked up the first win of his career with three scoreless innings of relief. Five Blue Jay pitchers combined to allow the Mustangs just three runs on four hits while striking out six batters. Freshmen Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff, NY/Hackley) and Dave Montegari (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) each threw one scoreless inning in their debuts as Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays return to action Friday as JHU hosts Johnson & Wales at 3:00 p.m.
