The Johns Hopkins baseball team swept two games from the Garnet Tide of Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays took the first game 12-1, and the second 25-0. With the two wins Hopkins improves to 15-5 on the year and 5-3 in Centennial play, while Swarthmore falls to 4-14 and 2-6.
In the first game, junior lefthander Jim Flannery (Rocky River, OH/St. Edwards) earned the win and improved to 3-0 on the year as he went six innings, yielding only one hit and no runs, while striking seven batters. Sophomore Dan Lewis (Nicasio, CA/Marin Academy) pitched allowed only one run in the seventh for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins but the game out of reach in the fourth, as they sent 13 batters to the plate and exploded for 10 runs. Junior Matt Scally (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) plated two runners with a two out double to right field, and senior Dave Montegari (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) capped the inning with a two-run blast over the left field fence, his third round tripper of the year.
Sophomore Ian Christie (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) led the Blue Jays offensivley as he went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Montegari was 2-for-3 on the day including a double, a home run and three runs batted in. As a team the Blue Jays pounded out 12 hits including six extra base hits.
In the second game, the Blue Jays quickly jumped on the scoreboard as they posted three runs in the first inning, and then scored another seven in the second to build a comfortable 10-0 lead after just two innings of play. The Blue Jays capitlized on seven errors by Swarthmore in the first two innings, needing only eight base hits to score their first 10 runs. Senior Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage) was 2-for-2 in the two rallies, in his only two at bats of the second game.
The Blue Jays continued their offensive onslaught as they scored in every inning of the second game as they picked up 26 hits en route to their 25 runs. Every Blue Jay who played in the second game got a hit. Freshmen Jonas Fester (Syosset, NY/Syosset) and Rob Peietroforte (Brooklyn, NY/Berkley Carrol) each went 4-for-7 in the win for the Blue Jays.Freshman Tony Marve (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) went 3-for-6 with a game-high seven runs batted in.Freshmen Todd Emr (Westwood, NJ/Saddle River Day) and Greg Ingram (Cape Cod, MA/Martha's Vineyard) each picked up their first collegiate hits in the win.
On the day, JHU hitters pounded out 37 hits in scoring 37 runs. The Blue Jay pitchers held Swarthmore to only one run and six base hits.
The Blue Jays will be back in action tommorow when they host the Lions of the College of New Jersey at 3:30 pm.
