Mitchell helped lead the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team to a four-year record of 47-6, four trips to the NCAA Tournament and three NCAA Championships (1984, 1985, 1987). A standout long-stick defensive midfielder, he earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a junior and First Team All-America honors as a senior. Mitchell was named to the All-Time Johns Hopkins Team at the end of his career and led the Blue Jays in ground balls as a junior and senior.

Mitchell earned First Team All-MAC Southeast as a member of the Johns Hopkins basketball team in 1984-85. He led the team in scoring (16.2 ppg.) and rebounding (9.8 rpg.) that year and started at forward as a freshman and sophomore.

Mitchell played just one season for the Blue Jay football team, but started at wide receiver and led the team in receiving (26 receptions for 491 yards and five touchdowns). He also finished second on the team in scoring that season.
